ZONI March 22nd Meeting Canceled

Dear ZONI colleagues,

Today I was informed that the Maine School District 207 has cancelled all reservations to outside groups using their facilities through the end of March.  While some may desire to see the Executive Board seek an alternate location for our scheduled March 22nd meeting, the health and safety of our membership is of top priority to me.  As such, we are cancelling (not postponing) our first membership meeting of the Spring Boys’ season.  Any information that can be shared electronically regarding the board member reports or educational components which were being prepared will be provided via email.  Additionally, I would encourage everyone to take an opportunity to re-read the rules and case books in the coming weeks so that we are prepared for whatever matches will occur in the future.  In the meantime, please practice protective measures and take care.

Respectfully,

Jon Heldmann
ZONI President

2020 Whistle for a Cause Clinic

The 2020 “Whistle for a Cause” volleyball clinic is scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd at Niles West High School, 2701 Oakton Street, Skokie from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  $30 registration at the door. This is a Level 1 and Level 2 IHSA Clinic.

Over the past 18 years, ZONI has contributed over $30,000 to help purchase needed equipment for grossly underfunded volleyball programs and to make donations to families in need of financial assistance in our volleyball community for medical expenses. We have been able to do this through registration fees and donations.

ZONI clinics are known throughout the state as one of the top educational opportunities for officials to learn, discuss and share the knowledge that makes us the best officials that we can be. It’s one day out of the year that we rely on our membership to step forward and prove to be the leaders that we aspire to be.

Beginners (0-1 years), Intermediate (1-3 years) will be led by experienced clinicians on the essentials of officiating.  Intermediate and veteran officials will be choosing from topics such as:

– Video review and discussion

– “You make the call” – scenarios that you can submit at the clinic

– Communication

– Professionalism and how it can help you be the best you can be

– Tricks of the trade

– R2’ing at your best

– Preparation – before and after arrival

2013 Whistle for a Cause Clinic Scheduled

The 2013 version of the Whistle for a Cause officials clinic has been scheduled for Saturday March 9, 2013 at Niles West High School.  Once again, all monies collected will help purchase vital equipment for needy area high school volleyball programs.  Please see the clinic flyer for more information and a registration form.

ZONI Recruits during State Series

Recruit-Neuqua2 Thanks to all of the ZONI members who helped recruit at various Sectional and Supersectional matches this fall. The numbers are still coming in, but at just a couple of sites, we had 10 existing officials express interest in joining ZONI as well as 15 people who were interested in becoming new officials. Great job, Cindy P., Ron L., and all of the others who helped out!

Whistle for a Cause to Raise Funds for Needy VB Programs

The 11th Whistle for a Cause Volleyball Officials Clinic will be held from 9 AM – 1 PM on Saturday, March 10, at Niles West High School in Skokie. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase volleyball equipment for area high schools that lack even the most basic equipment (such as balls and nets) for their volleyball programs.

Since the initial event in 1997, the Clinic has raised over $22,000 for a variety of causes related to high school athletics. In recent years, clinic proceeds have benefitted:

  • 21 Needy Chicago-Area High School Volleyball Programs
  • 3 New Orleans High School Volleyball Programs devastated by Hurricane Katrina
  • 2 High school volleyball players stricken with cancer
  • A high school basketball player who lost both feet and all fingers to complications from bacterial meningitis
  • A multi-sport high school athlete battling leukemia
  • The family (including a volleyball coach) of a volleyball player killed in the Columbine massacre
  • A child of a volleyball coach stricken with leukemia
  • A toddler of a volleyball official battling Hodgkin’s Disease
  • An infant son of a volleyball official with a heart defect

In the past, in addition to money raised for purchases and equipment distributor contributions, many local high schools have donated their gently-used equipment to other schools that are in need.

ZONI is sponsoring the clinic. Clinicians are all very experienced high school officials. Collectively, the group has many State Final assignments, and includes PAVO and USAV National Referees and multiple Division I college referees.

The cost of the clinic is $20 for those who register before March 2, 2012. Additional donations are welcomed.

For more information about the clinic and to register, please check out the Clinic Flyer . Additional questions may be directed to Looie Green (looieg60@gmail.com), Ed Vesely (eveselyvb@gmail.com), or Nancy Nester (njn51@hotmail.com).
